Your Only Friend

You walk in,
Your nervousness causing you to quake.
You try to hide it,
Walk briskly with your head down.

The others are all smiling,
They greet you kindly.
"Come hang out with us." They say,
Holding their hands out to you.

You try to smile,
You try to open your mouth.
You try to respond,
You try to communicate.

Your voice catches,
Like an insect in a spider's web.
Your eyes widen,
And you freeze.

Their smiles falter,
Their eyes narrow.
Their arms begin to drop,
And they begin to step back.

"No! Wait, don't leave me!"
You try to call out,
But you can't make a sound,
All you can do is panic.

You do all that you can,
You can't stand to live with your loneliness another day.
But all you do is stand there,
Internally screaming for them to come back.

They all turn around,
Laughing and smiling.
They walk away from you,
Leaving you in the dark.

"It's okay."
Your mind whispers,
"I'll never leave you behind."
You feel the sting of tears in your eyes.

Your voice chokes,
And your head lowers again.
You've accepted your fate,
All you have is yourself.
